This post is part of a series introducing our new faculty for the 2024-2025 school year. Please be sure to introduce yourselves to them!
KATHRYN KNIGHT
From Meghan Stott, Lower School Director:
Kathryn holds a Masters in Elementary Education from Oakland University. She has served as a guest teacher at various schools and has been a preschool director at Troy Gymnastics where she designed and implemented curriculum for early childhood students.
More recently, Kathryn brings to us her experience working at Wattles Elementary school where she was a full-time kindergarten teacher. Kathryn helped lead a team to promote character building across the student population. This led Kathryn to apply for and earn the school the National School of Character award.
Kathryn impressed us all with her lesson on non-fiction reading and writing, where the students worked collectively to create an informational book all about Roeper and the meaningful places around our campus.
Kathryn’s experience, hard work and understanding of teaching and learning will be an immense asset to the Roeper community.
Kathryn's answers to our questions:
What is your new position at Roeper - details like what subjects you will be teaching, which division and are you working with other faculty?
My position will be an associate teacher in Stage II working with Jen Allen.
What were one or two highlights of your life?
A couple of highlights from my life would be the birth of my kids, Elizabeth and Teddy. Another highlight was finishing my first marathon in 2019. It felt so great to accomplish the goal.
If you could live anywhere worldwide for a year, where would it be and why?
I would love to live in Banff, Alberta. I visited a few years ago and the natural beauty was overwhelming. I would love an entire year to soak up the trees, mountains, and clear blue water.
What would you like to share about yourself, your family, and your birthplace?
Although I was born in Michigan, I lived in eight different states growing up because my dad was in the army. It taught me how to love new places and to make friends wherever I go. I have two younger siblings and love to travel to the many new places where they live. My kiddos and I love Michigan and plan to stay for a long time.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?
I love running and exercising; strengthening the mind body connection is a huge passion of mine. I also enjoy paper crafting, paddleboarding, and music.
What is a topic or skill that you love to teach or share and why?
I love to teach literacy and the connection between reading and writing. Reading teaches us about others’ perspectives, and writing teaches us about our own. The transfer between the two helps us find who we are as people.
What is it that appealed to you about Roeper when you took the position?
I love that Roeper puts the child’s needs as the top learning priority. Learning that is centered around kids and not rigid in scope or time is bound to be authentic and therefore effective.
